Mclaren Circus 12-05-2009 Share

Mclaren's circus has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks and has responded by targeting a number of animal welfare groups and individuals with legal threats. The reality is that the circus is responsible for the negative attention they are receiving because of their use of performing animals.

Opposition to performing animals in circuses is a global phenomenon, with hundreds of animal welfare / rights groups and millions of people campaigning for an end to the use of animals in this medium. Many countries and cities all over the world have banned circuses with performing animals.

As soon as Mclaren's circus bought two lions to add to their traveling menagerie, they invited the kind of scrutiny they are now under from animal welfare / rights groups.

We and other animal welfare org's have received a steady stream of complaints from the general public about the conditions the two lions are kept in.

Whether or not the animals are well fed, have clean cages and receive veterinary care is irrelevant, our opinion is that a circus is not a suitable home for a wild animal. A circus cannot offer a lion even the bare minimum of environmental factors required to meet this species psychological and physical needs. A trailer and small exercise area in a different parking lot every few days is not something any lion should have to endure.

Our concern has always been for the animals and their long term future.
